Date Night: Clay Pigeon

The mister never ceases to amaze me when finding interesting places to dine. Lately, we have been fans of this show called “The Bear” so he’s been on the lookout for restaurants that give a similar vibe. On one of the more recent date night visits we hit up a local spot called Clay Pigeon. I never heard of it, but I’m so glad we gave it a shot 😊 Clay Pigeon is Chef owned and operated so it did NOT disappoint!

Lately in my dining experiences, I’ve tried to push myself to:

1. Wait until arriving to look at the menu

2. Actually try some of the Chef inspired seasonal specials

3. Eat something unique

4. Try an appetizer, entree, AND desert for a full course meal

Experiencing a restaurant in this way allows me to add layers of discovery to the overall experience. Besides newness, we get the full effect of artsy and open ourselves up to fun surprises along the way 🙌🏾

We started off the night with Bone Marrow also known at the restaurant as God’s Butter 😂 The dish was gelatinous and rich. It reminds me of the flavorful tasty bits you scrape from the bottom of a pan to make a nice gravy. We put the marrow on some crisp bread devouring every bite! This appetizer truly set high expectations for the rest of the night.

The next dish we tried I ordered on a whim, but it was a Peach Gazpacho with Crab. I couldn’t imagine how this would even taste in my head 🤔. I’m a huge fan of soup, but peaches and crab just do not mix in my opinion. At the recommendation of our server we gave it a try and I’m soooo glad we did!

Besides being a beautiful dish, it was surprisingly well balanced. The peach is bright with a tang of acidity which works well with the fresh meaty crab 😋. This was my unique pick of the evening and I was so satisfied to have taken the risk.

For our entree’s hubs went with a Braised Short Rib with Whipped Potatoes, Grilled Broccolini, and of course a side order of Mac & Cheese.

I had the Grilled Duck Breast with Roasted Mushrooms and Fennel Soubise. I’m not going to pretend to know what Soubise is, but with a little help from google, it’s a white cream sauce made with onion purée.

Neither of us had complaints about our dishes. Both were hearty and very tasty. Compliments to the Chef!

The great thing about these courses was the food portions were not overwhelming so we still had room for dessert. We ordered the Date Cake which came with a scoop of ice cream and a drizzle of caramel.

We dug in and although it was a nice finish to our meal, we both agreed that the Date Cake we had at Best Friend in Las Vegas for our 10 year anniversary was better than this one. Really it came down to the cake being a tad on the drier side. However, I do think if I had no other Date Cake to compare it to, this would have been better.

Overall this is another win in Fort Worth restaurants for us. I’m excited to go back for future visits and see what delicious dishes they come up with.

Til next time, happy adventures in dining 🙌🏾
