Cozumel and Effect: Navigating Mariner of the Seas in Worldly Waters

Yep! That’s the conversation I wanted to have with my 8-year-old while on vacation. ‘Mommy, why are women showing their butts in swimsuits?'”

I didn’t smuggle enough Dramamine aboard for this kind of ship rocking chat 😳 Welcome to Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas—a complete blindside situation during our family reunion amongst the booze cruise crowd. I 👏🏾WAS 👏🏾NOT 👏🏾PREPARED👏🏾

HIGH SEAS, HIGH HOPES

It didn’t start off that way. Our fam had been hyping up this trip since spring. I even got the kiddo’s character embossed luggage to match their vacation vibes energy.

Day of, we zipped down to Galveston and boarded the ship sporting matching family reunion tees. A quick pit stop to throw the luggage in the stateroom and we high tailed it to the Main Pool Deck Bar for the family meet and greet.

SMOOTH SAILING UNTIL…

Everything was fine until my eyes took in the layout from the balcony. There were plenty of thongs afoot (and I wish I meant sandals).

The heat of anxiety mixed with embarrassment crept up my neck. I was unprepared for our four person squad to navigate this minefield.

While the kids were safely distracted in the cabana, my maternal spidey-sense went into overdrive. My eyes were scanning the room like a hawk, mentally plotting our escape route to anywhere else.

Unlike our Utopia of The Seas Cruise, Mariner did not have a designated spot for children. Utopia features an entire separated, family-friendly area complete with its own splash-pad setup, keeping the kid energy cleanly partitioned from the shared pools.

With the littles pleading for a dip, we ran a quick wardrobe change and ventured down. Thankfully, the main pool enabled us to crop out much of the inappropriate scenery.

By shortening our field of view, we created a safer family bubble amidst the chaos. The girls swam to their hearts content enjoying a much needed cooling off in the water.

STATEROOM SERMONETTE

Unfortunately, all the baring bodies couldn’t be avoided and my kiddo’s curiosity eventually peaked. I’m glad she spoke up and asked the question. She mentioned feeling embarrassed of what she had seen (Same).

I took it as an opportunity to impart what wisdom I could. Kneeling against the bed at eye level, here is what I shared with both of them:

  1. God gave us our bodies as a gift
  2. We do not flaunt gifts or glorify ourselves
  3. We cover up out of respect for God
  4. We shouldn’t be ashamed of our bodies
  5. We do not stare when others reveal
  6. If others reveal, we avert our eyes

Questions answered and hearts at ease, we closed out Day 1 the best way we knew how: a buffet run and room service in our pajamas.

TURNING THE TIDES

Day two was all about unhurried joy. Mini golf, sun lounging, hammocks, and jungle gyms kept the girls plenty busy. Eventually we made it back to the pool for another fun dip in the water.

We wrapped up our activities in time to prep for an early Captain’s Dinner. All fancied up, we found our way to the Main Dining Room where we enjoyed a posh dinner with extended family.

COZY-MEL

Finally, the day had arrived for our Mexican beach adventures! We abandoned ship and zoomed through the port, the singular focus on our Cabana Beach day at Chankanaab.

Upon entry, smiles were served alongside the most delicious mango cooler I’ve ever had! Dahlia, the glorious cabana concierge, escorted us to our private hut for the day.

Cheers!

After settling in and a getting a lay of the land, we ordered drinks and geared up for our first snorkeling adventure as a family.

Silently praying for intimidating currents not to bully me into neighboring rocks, I took a swim of faith into the open sea. To my humble surprise, everything enjoyable about snorkeling rushed back—the unthreatened clusters of tropical fish darting within arms reach, screensaver worthy views of aquatic life, endless turquoise water that reflects like glass—perfect!

We had the BEST time! Click here for a more detailed review of this little pocket of private escape.

After a delightful lunch, hours wound down. We said a heartfelt goodbye to Dahlia and our serene hut, steeling ourselves to navigate the gauntlet of port merchants on the way back.

Swimming really took it out of us, so we stayed in the room on recovery mode, only leaving later that evening to catch the Mariner’s main act Jason Garfield. A pro juggler with a sideline comedy act, Jason wowed us with his years of intense training and skills.

Merrily exhausted we dragged ourselves back to our stateroom and it was lights out for the rest of the night.

SEA YA

Our last day aboard was truly lazy. We kept no schedule and I personally did as little as humanly possible. Aside from leaving the room for food and a trip to the ice rink for the girls, I got lost in a new book I borrowed from the ship’s library.

With my social battery at a deficit, I could tell I was ready for land and home. Sometimes vacation still ends up being work oddly enough.

While navigating the unexpected surprises aboard proved wearisome at times, I’m deeply grateful for the chance to impart wisdom to my girls, grow stronger with my husband, and make memories with my crew.

Turns out, navigating worldly waters ain’t nothing when you’re anchored to the right Captain (if you catch my drift 😏)

Pass the Plate or Else: Thug Priests and the Road to Shechem

IMAGINE THIS:

You’re driving to church. A gang of clergymen are blocking the street entrance. Unfazed, you pull up. These are pastors—shepherds—godly men. Nothing to worry about, you think to yourself.

Suddenly, you’re yanked from the car! The horde demands your wallet and keys. Deathly afraid, you comply. They rough you up and peel off with the car, leaving you broken and stranded in the dust…

Welcome to the road to Shechem 😳

PEARL CLUTCHING HABITS IN HOSEA

I was curled up sipping on the latest Hosea chapter 6 tea when something caught my eye. God is locked in, ripping Israel a new one through the prophet. The pre-exilic tribe is wilin’ and the Lord calls out some truly disturbing behavior.

Verse 9 stood out vividly among the others:

“As robbers lie in wait for a man, so the priests band together; they murder on the way to Shechem; they commit villainy.” (Hosea 6:9 ESV)

Wait, what! A murdering band of priests?? The paradox had me shook! How did holy men of God turn into a brood of supervillains?

PATIENT ZERO: KING JEROBOAM I

At this point in history, the city of Shechem was a key religious center connecting the highway to Samaria (Israel’s capital). Worshipers traveling with offerings, money, or tithes risked ambush by the priestly clique.

The moral decay of the Northern Kingdom was a result of over 200 years of corruption. When Israel split, the northern half, run by King Jeroboam I, feared his people would travel south to Solomon’s Jerusalem temple. If his subjects reverted back to loyalty under the Davidic king line, he would lose everything.

To combat this, Jeroboam did a few shady things:

  • He built competing shrines in his half of the country fully outfitted with golden calves (Total first commandment miss 😳)
  • He ejected the legit Levitical priests, who refused to serve at the idol shrines and fled south to Judah.
  • He hired unauthorized “priests” to fill the Levitical void.

As a result, the office of priesthood in the north turned into a money grab. If someone had enough wealth or influence, the job was theirs.

Since priests were paid with tithes, local taxes, and sacrificial fees, the worship centers operated as lucrative businesses. However, when money got tight, more extreme measures for a ROI became the norm.

Because of the mad political chaos leading up to Hosea’s time, different groups splintered, divvying up control of the shrine locations. Rival priest gangs ambushed travelers as a function of their greed and desperate attempts to maintain control by fear. Essentially, these are the Bloods and Crips of the Old Testament 😳.

COOL STORY BRO, WHAT’S THE POINT?

No wonder God is pissed! The very leaders meant to protect and serve are plundering and slaughtering!

There is so much corruption that God used an exile to spiritually cleanse every crack and crevice of a nation gone bad. It’s wild to see how human iniquity twists a good thing—like wanting to worship God—into a fear-driven attempt to gain money and power at the expense of the people’s safety.

When we erase God from the picture and lead out of fear, all hell breaks loose… literally. But God cares deeply about justice. None of these horrifying actions go unnoticed or unpunished, and He steps in to provide a way out.

Seeing the path of an unchecked heart keeps me eager to walk with God no matter what road I travel.

Exterminating Discomfort: What 26 Hours of Labor Taught Me About Peace

Lately, I’ve been studying Hosea.

In chapter 3:1, there’s a direct parallel: Gomer (Hosea’s adulterous wife) turns to another lover, just as Israel turns from God to follow pagan idols.

It got me thinking: What hidden idols am I following?

I actually had AI generate a quiz to help me see where my heart goes astray. Wouldn’t you know it—comfort is my big one.

And let’s be honest: comfort is wildly enjoyable. I love the feeling of peace that seems to hover when we’re financially secure, materially content, and relationally stable. It feels like a forcefield protecting our home on all sides. I will do almost anything to keep those comfort levels maxed out.

I’ll sacrifice quiet time with the Lord to lounge in bed scrolling through online news. I’ll talk myself into purchases that satisfy my immediate wants. I’ve even justified it all by convincing myself that my personal comfort must be at the top of God’s priority list.

My wake-up call came 8 years ago when I was in labor with my firstborn.

I endured 26 hours of active, unmedicated labor—a level of physical suffering I had never known. While I chose to go unmedicated of sound mind, I hit an absolute wall once transition began. I couldn’t escape it, rush it, or make it less painful. At one point, I was just rocking back and forth, praying through every worsening contraction.

If it were up to me, I would choose to never experience discomfort again. There’s no telling how much time, energy, and money I’ve spent trying to exterminate it from my life.

But that’s a fantasy.

In the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, Job 5:6-7 states:

“For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground, but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward.”

Trouble, hardship, and discomfort are a natural part of living in a fallen world. As unpleasant as they are, facing them doesn’t mean we are being punished or indicted of wrongdoing.

For the believer, there is immense reassurance in the middle of the hard. Jesus gave his disciples a reality check paired with a promise in John 16:33:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus assures us that the ultimate worst-case scenario—eternal separation and death—has been completely taken off the table. Everyday human troubles lose their power to ruin us because our hope is anchored in Christ.

Hardships can and will disrupt my comfort. But they cannot destroy my destiny.

I don’t have to live in fear of being trapped in high-pressure situations. What is temporary discomfort compared to the ultimate comfort of knowing eternity is secured by the One who made me?

Reflecting on my labor brought a beautiful realization to mind: my mom endured four unmedicated births, and she is one of the most joyful people I know. I stepped into that room knowing she made it to the other side of that exact same suffering—and thrived.

My lesson learned is to expect trouble. Endure it. And take heart knowing there is an absolute expiration date on discomfort for those in Christ.

Ink-spiration: The Tale Of My Tree Tattoo

When I was a kid, I remember attending an event called Hell House. It was a walk-through experience designed as an alternative to haunted houses during Halloween. The actors portrayed various real-life characters, and as crowds moved through, they encountered staged scenes illustrating the potential consequences of choosing a path of darkness.
