Subway Envy and Square Pizza: A Texas Girl’s Guide to a Surprising Weekend in Boston

If you had asked me a few weeks ago what I expected from a weekend getaway to Boston, my answer probably would have involved some vague ideas about historical brick buildings and maybe a bowl of clam chowder. I certainly didn’t expect to fall for the city’s quirky charm—or to leave with a massive case of public transit envy (Fort Worth, we need to talk about subways).

From celebrating America’s massive 250th birthday alongside a sea of people, to navigating unassuming local food joints that serve up literal magic, Boston completely upended my expectations. It turns out this city is a unique blend of deep historical pride, upscale date nights, and peak “college yummy” pizza.

Pack your bags (and your appetite)—here is a realistic, laugh-out-loud look at our three-day whirlwind escape to the East Coast.

Chapter 1: Boston Broke My Blogging Hiatus (And My Feet)

Right out the gate, our mission at hand was getting to our hotel. Heading inbound towards the city, my first impression was a relaxed, laid-back vibe—which is pretty unique for a downtown space. It actually reminded me of how chill Fort Worth can be!

🍍 Basecamp: The Spunky Staypineapple

For lodging, I chose the spunky, bright Staypineapple Boutique Hotel in Back Bay. It stands uniquely counter to the historic buildings surrounding it with its bright yellow lobby and colorful checkered hallways.

The rooms are cozy and quaint—what they lack in space, they make up for with over-the-top quirks and top-notch service. I highly recommend it for minimalist travelers! A few favorites:

  • A cute stuffed pup waiting on the bed.
  • Super plush robes for lounging.
  • An “everything button” on the room phone (press it and the concierge handles the rest).
  • Complimentary bikes, free water refills, and umbrellas ready the second it drizzles.

🌶️ Step 1: Solving the DFW Food Dilemma in Chinatown

We dropped our bags and headed straight to Hunan Cuisine in the heart of Chinatown. The no-frills restaurant was live and buzzing. We ordered pork belly, wings, bok choy, and salt & pepper fish.

The Foodie Verdict: Decent salt & pepper fish is incredibly hard to come by in the DFW area, so I was thrilled to finally have some that matched my high expectations!

🌸 Step 2: Golden Hour at the Garden

To walk off the impending food coma, we took a scenic stroll through the Boston Public Garden. Sunset was the perfect opportunity to snap a few gorgeous green pics and people-watch from a bench by the fountain.

Right as the rain clouds rolled in, we ditched the park and headed back. Talk about perfect timing—the exact second we stepped inside the hotel lobby, the skies opened up into a massive downpour!

🎆 Step 3: 400 Drones & Ground-Shaking Fireworks

Once the storm passed, we met up with our Pillar Church family for the epic 250th 4th of July Celebration over the Charles River. Our pastor and his wife are Boston locals, so they gave us the ultimate insider tip: meet on the MIT side to avoid the worst of the crowds.

The celebration was immense. We watched 400 drones transform into historical images in the night sky while the crowd loudly guessed each shape. I easily spotted Paul Revere riding his horse, which definitely made me smile!

Eat your heart out Disney

Then came the fireworks. It was hands down the biggest and best fireworks show I have ever seen.

Disney World? Didn’t compare.

Dîner en Blanc? Didn’t compare.

For more than 20 minutes, the glitz and glam started off big and just got bigger. It was truly magical.

Chapter 2: Matrimony, Holy Cannoli, and Why #TeamLion is Going Down

💍 Step 1: He Put a Ring On It

Our Sunday mission was celebrating a beautiful union, starting with a stunning multilingual wedding ceremony and ending with a lively feast.

  • The Service: The Boston Missionary Baptist Church was packed tight for a beautiful, energizing Haitian service. The room fell perfectly silent as everyone gathered to witness a sacred marriage before the Lord.
A view from my seat
  • The Celebration: We kept the party going with a private lunch at Fogo de Chão. Half the restaurant was cheering and spinning napkins overhead before the send off to their Jamaican honeymoon.

Step 2: Freedom Trails & Pastry Tales

Our next mission was sightseeing our way through Boston, which meant weaving through historic crowds and balancing on old cobblestones.

The Vibe: Faneuil Hall was all about history and shopping, but Little Italy felt like a land unto itself—buzzing with crowds, open restaurant windows, and intoxicating food smells.

The Rivalry: We noticed that Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry had lines wrapping down the block on opposing sides. It honestly feels like a hilarious, head-to-head pastry battle zone (and I’m half-convinced it’s a conspiracy and they’re secretly owned by the same family 🤔).

🦍 Step 3: The Great Lion vs. Gorilla Debate

Sparked by the pastry shop feud, we brought our favorite hypothetical animal showdown to the dinner table.

The Vibe: A winner-takes-all grapple where lines are drawn and everyone stands ten toes down in their corner.

The Verdict: I am fiercely loyal to #TeamGorilla, while hubs remains stubbornly #TeamLion in our time-tested marital rivalry. Even with the facts on #TeamGorilla side, our friends left us completely deadlocked in a 50/50 draw.

Chapter 3: Law Legends, Ivy League, and Lobstah

Our next adventure had us pulling a total Mike Ross—weaving through Harvard’s stunning, story-filled campus before hunting down the ultimate local lobster.

🍕 Step 1: Pre-Tour Fuel at Pinocchio’s

Knowing we couldn’t tackle Ivy League history on an empty stomach, we ditched the subway and embarked on a hunt for the notorious square pizza.

  • The Vibe: An unassuming, casual beat that stands in high contrast to all that Harvard pomp and circumstance.
  • The Foodie Verdict: We were both totally digging that deep, buttery Sicilian-style crust. It is peak “college yummy”—I can easily see why students crowd the counter for a late-night slice.

🎓 Step 2: Crimson Canvassing

Properly fueled, we downloaded the tour app and set off to explore the story-filled, legacy-steeped landscape of Harvard.

  • The Vibe: Curated grounds housing renowned academic buildings—I could feel the 4.0’s pulsating throughout the campus.
  • The Architecture: Since “the law is a precise endeavor,” I especially enjoyed the meticulous design of the Widener Memorial Library. Clean gray stairs lead up to a towering row of columns guarding the entrance.

🦞 Step 3: The Grand Finale at Row 34

To wrap up our Cambridge journey, we headed to a local hot spot for an upscale date night—the absolute perfect cherry on top of a fun-filled trip. With its lively, upbeat mood and sleek, contemporary furnishings, the space instantly gave us a welcome taste of home.

  • The Mic Drop (Part 1): We kicked things off with a half-dozen oysters spanning three varying levels of brininess, expertly guided through the flavor spectrum by our stellar server, Esteban.
  • The Mic Drop (Part 2): Then came the main event—a classic warm, buttery lobster roll that was absolutely bursting with meat. Massive, chunky pieces of sweet lobster would fall out the sides with every single bite.
  • The Verdict: Happily satisfied and thoroughly well-fed, we toasted our waters to an unforgettable vacation. We were finally ready to catch our flight back home to Funky Town (though I seriously considered smuggling a few lobsters in my carry-on).
