Suddenly, you’re yanked from the car! The horde demands your wallet and keys. Deathly afraid, you comply. They rough you up and peel off with the car, leaving you broken and stranded in the dust…

PEARL CLUTCHING HABITS IN HOSEA

I was curled up sipping on the latest Hosea chapter 6 tea when something caught my eye. God is locked in, ripping Israel a new one through the prophet. The pre-exilic tribe is wilin’ and the Lord calls out some truly disturbing behavior.

Verse 9 stood out vividly among the others:

“As robbers lie in wait for a man, so the priests band together; they murder on the way to Shechem; they commit villainy.” (Hosea 6:9 ESV)

Wait, what! A murdering band of priests?? The paradox had me shook! How did holy men of God turn into a brood of supervillains?

PATIENT ZERO: KING JEROBOAM I

At this point in history, the city of Shechem was a key religious center connecting the highway to Samaria (Israel’s capital). Worshipers traveling with offerings, money, or tithes risked ambush by the priestly clique.

The moral decay of the Northern Kingdom was a result of over 200 years of corruption. When Israel split, the northern half, run by King Jeroboam I, feared his people would travel south to Solomon’s Jerusalem temple. If his subjects reverted back to loyalty under the Davidic king line, he would lose everything.

To combat this, Jeroboam did a few shady things:

• He built competing shrines in his half of the country fully outfitted with golden calves (Total first commandment miss 😳)
• He ejected the legit Levitical priests, who refused to serve at the idol shrines and fled south to Judah.
• He hired unauthorized “priests” to fill the Levitical void.

As a result, the office of priesthood in the north turned into a money grab. If someone had enough wealth or influence, the job was theirs.

Since priests were paid with tithes, local taxes, and sacrificial fees, the worship centers operated as lucrative businesses. However, when money got tight, more extreme measures for a ROI became the norm.

Because of the mad political chaos leading up to Hosea’s time, different groups splintered, divvying up control of the shrine locations. Rival priest gangs ambushed travelers as a function of their greed and desperate attempts to maintain control by fear. Essentially, these are the Bloods and Crips of the Old Testament 😳.

COOL STORY BRO, WHAT’S THE POINT?

No wonder God is pissed! The very leaders meant to protect and serve are plundering and slaughtering!

There is so much corruption that God used an exile to spiritually cleanse every crack and crevice of a nation gone bad. It’s wild to see how human iniquity twists a good thing—like wanting to worship God—into a fear-driven attempt to gain money and power at the expense of the people’s safety.

When we erase God from the picture and lead out of fear, all hell breaks loose… literally. But God cares deeply about justice. None of these horrifying actions go unnoticed or unpunished, and He steps in to provide a way out.

Seeing the path of an unchecked heart keeps me eager to walk with God no matter what road I travel.
